Privacy Policy

Couplehood ("we", "us") is built on the belief that the relationships you reflect on here are private. This page explains, in plain language, what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

What we collect

We collect only what we need to deliver the service:

Account information. Your email address, a display name you choose, and a hashed (irreversible) representation of your password. We never store your password in plaintext.

Profile information. Anything you choose to add to your identity profile, partner profiles, or preferences. These are optional fields. You can leave any of them blank.

Conversation content. The messages you send to your AI companion and the responses we generate, along with the relationship label you've attached to that conversation.

Anonymous activity. If you start a conversation without an account, we issue a random token in a cookie and link your messages to it. When you register, that anonymous data is moved into your account.

Billing data. If you subscribe, Stripe processes your payment. We never see your card number — we only receive a customer ID and a record of the charges you've authorized.

Operational data. Server logs (IP address, browser type, request URLs) for security and debugging. These are kept briefly and then rotated.

How we use your information

We use what you give us to: provide the conversations and reflections you've requested; personalize the AI's responses to your situation; deliver email reminders or reset links you've asked for; detect and respond to crisis indicators (see below); detect and prevent abuse of the service; and process payments for paid subscriptions.

How AI processing works

Conversations are processed by a third-party large language model provider (currently Anthropic) under their commercial API terms. We send the model the relevant portions of the conversation, your relationship context, and your profile so it can respond meaningfully. The provider does not use your conversations to train their models under the API agreement we operate on.

Crisis detection

Your messages are scanned for indicators that someone may be in crisis (self-harm, abuse, immediate danger). When detected, we surface relevant resources in the chat and may notify our internal safety contact at a high severity. We do not contact emergency services on your behalf — for active emergencies, call or text 988 (US) or your local emergency number.

Data retention & deletion

Your data stays in your account for as long as it's open. You can export everything as a JSON file at any time from your profile, and you can permanently delete your account from the same screen — this removes your relationships, conversations, profile fields, and partner profiles, and cancels any active subscription.

Sharing

We do not sell your data. We share information only with: (a) the AI provider as described above; (b) Stripe, for payment processing; (c) email infrastructure to deliver messages you've requested; and (d) law enforcement only when required by valid legal process.

Cookies

We use a small number of essential cookies: a session cookie to keep you signed in, an anonymous-token cookie that lets you start a conversation without registering, and a CSRF token cookie to protect form submissions. We do not use advertising trackers.

Children

Couplehood is not designed for and may not be used by anyone under the age of 18.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll notify registered users by email and update the date at the top of this page.
